Both met Frank Costello at a young age and decided to serve him and his mob.

2. Why is Billy Costigan selected by Captain Queenan and Sergeant Dignam to go undercover as a criminal?
Because his father is a powerful drug dealer on the North Shore respected by gangsters including Frank Costello himself.
Because his parents divorced when he was at an early age. That made Billy become a super troublesome drug dealer.
Because he had polemic past relations with the South Boston Gang from his father’s side of the family.
That’s it. Many members of the Costigan family were involved in illegal activities.
3. Why does Billy start seeing Dr. Madolyn Madden?
Because of Colin’s relationship with her. Billy wanted to make him pay.
Because, since Billy met Dr. Madden in an elevator, he is deeply attracted to her.
Because of his mental state decline due to the complicated nature of his job.
That’s it. Only later Madolyn and Billy start to have an affair.
4. How does Delahunt figure out that Billy is the mole in Frank’s mob?
Delahunt knew that since Billy didn’t wait at the bar the day he had to hand in the envelope with information.
To catch the informant, Delahunt asked Frank who was the person that didn’t wait for the phone call with the information. That’s when he figured things out.
During an attempt to catch the informant, Delahunt accidentally gave Costigan the wrong address, but Costigan still showed up at the right one.
True! Although Delahunt mentioned the wrong place, Billy was at the right address when Queenam died.
5. Why does Colin kill Frank?
Because he discovers that Frank is threatening Madolyn.
Because he is worried that Frank will find out the truth about Billy.
Because he is worried that Frank had mentioned his name to the FBI.
That’s it. Since Colin found out that Frank is an FBI informant, things have changed.
6. Why doesn’t Billy kill Colin when he had the chance?
Billy wanted to embarrass Colin in front of Madolyn.
Colin couldn’t be killed because Frank had another mole infiltrated in the SIU.
Colin is the only one who knows the truth and can give Billy his life back.
Good job! Killing Colin would make Billy’s version of the story impossible to be confirmed.
